Living green needn’t be a fairy tale. At And They Lived Green, we source good and green products from around the world to make it easier for you to make ethical, organic and sustainable choices.
When we label a product as Organic, it means that the ingredients or cotton used to produce the products are free from harmful chemicals and pesticides.
Organic cotton is grown, produced and manufactured without the use of harmful and polluting chemicals and pesticides. Conventionally grown cotton crops use more pesticides than any other type of crop globally. These chemicals pollute the environment in the areas that they are used; can be unhealthy for farmers; and may leave a residue on the finished cotton garment that can irritate sensitive skin.
Organic cotton is a safer choice for our environment, for the farmers and for you and your family.
When we label a product as Fair trade, it has been certified as a fair trade product by one of the recognised international fair trade certifiers. This means that the producers or workers manufacturing the product have received a fair wage and operate under better trading conditions.
These conditions include health and safety requirements being met in the workplace, no forced labour, and no child labour.
When we label a product as Ethically made, it has been manufactured under fair working conditions, without the use of sweatshops, and the workers have been paid fairly.
It may not be a certified fair trade product, but it has been responsibly manufactured by companies that have committed to paying workers a fair wage and ensuring that they work under fair conditions.
It may also mean that the product has been manufactured in a developed country where established employment laws make fair trade certification unnecessary, such as New Zealand, Australia or the United States.
We aim to be as transparent as possible about the origins of all our products, so that you can make an informed choice. We will make every effort to tell you where a product has been produced and made.
Recycled or Recyclable
When we label a product Recycled, it has been made out of recycled or waste materials. When we label a product Recyclable, you can safely recycle this product when it reaches the end of its life.
Recycling is an important and easy way that we can all contribute to improve waste management, reduce our impact on the environment and its resources, and strive to achieve a smaller environmental footprint overall.
We think of sustainability as the actions we take on behalf of our environment to reduce the amount of energy and resources that we consume, and to reduce the amount of waste that we produce.
We use the term Sustainable to describe products that are made from sustainable materials (i.e., FSC wood, or fast-growing plants like bamboo or flax) or the sustainable choices we make.
We define sustainable choices as products and practices that:
- reduce energy use;
- reduce the amount of new resources being consumed to make a product (using recycled or sustainable materials); and
- reduce waste (reusable or biodegradable products).
